For over 20 years I have been a freelance writer, essayist, and poet. I've written about bars and blind horses, bald eagles and bears, artists, architects, luthiers, vinters, and one Governor's dog. Primarily a nature and wildlife writer, I also focus on artist and people profiles, science issues, and whatever assignments come my way. With well over 100 publishing credits to my name my work has appeared in a wide variety of newspapers, journals, magazines, and anthologies, including, The Sun, Wild Earth, Big Sky Journal, Montana Quarterly, Writers on the Range, Northern Lights, and many more. Samples from my 20 years of writing can be found by clicking the link at the top of the page.

I am the author of Wild Delicate Seconds: 29 Wildlife Encounters (OSU Press 2012). Collected from 15 years of living in the Pacific Northwest these micro essays are my attempt to record the wonder and awe of encountering the wild, feathered, and furred we share the region with.

My book of poetry paired with the black and white landscape photograpghy of Barbara Michelman, On a Benediction of Wind from Chatwin Books was the winner of the 2022 Montana Book Award. .

For ten years I was the editor of High Desert Journal, a print and now online magazine dedicated to the interior West. Assigning stories, editting submissions, proofreading, line editing, and designing the website, I have worked with, published, and am proud to call friends many of the best writers working in the country today. High Desert Journal includes as its contributors Gary Synder, Ursula K. Le Quin, Terry Tempest Williams, David James Duncan, Rick Bass, Gretel Ehrlich, Robert Michael Pyle, Kim Stafford, and many, many more.
